Lyrics from
The Pearl and the Swine
When Woody Guthrie was singing hillbilly songs on a little Los Angeles radio station in the late 1930s, he used to mail out a mimeographed songbook to listeners who wanted the words to his songs, On the bottom of one page appeared the following:
"This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don't give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that's all we wanted to do."
Well we feel the same way, so consider this our jet-age mimeographed songbook.. If you like our songs, copy 'em off this page and have your way with 'em. If you need help with the chords email Steve and he'll help you out if he's not too grumpy that day..
One more thing. When we do a show we encourage everyone to sing along. Group singing is about the funnest thing you can do with your clothes on, so by all means, learn the songs and come out and sing with us.

Reputation Of A Rambler
© 2002 Steve Werner
I got a black heart that has been burned boys
black as satan's coal
I got a black hat that I have earned boys
bought and paid for with my soul
CHORUS
I've got the reputation of a rambler
a reputation of a rounder on the rain
I've got the reputation of a rambler
gone again, gone again
I've got scars that never heal boys
I've got pain I'll never show
I've got crimes I can't conceal boys
what I feel you'll never know
CHORUS
I've got a restless disposition
I've got trouble dogging me
Out here on the devil's highway
buddy no one rides for free
CHORUS
Please don't go where I have gone boys
you won't see what I have seen
There's white crosses on the highways
everywhere that I have been
CHORUS
Ventura County Line

You woke me up from a dream
I was alone on a windy street
And I've been all through this old town
never having seen you around
CHORUS:
And I've got you on my mind
I'm coming in on time
Ventura County Line
All the truckers smile as if they know
daisies waving to say hello
This engine's moving mighty fine
Though I've been told it's way past it's prime
CHORUS,
(Instrumental break over verse)
BRIDGE:
Every fruit stand and exit sign
brings me closer to that boy of mine
Picture postcards for a dime
wishful thinking can't be a crime
There's always somewhere else I'd rather be
I'm a bird who knows how to be free
CHORUS
I don't care how far I've gotta go
he loves me that's all I need to know
And I'm getting down to my last rhyme
I've just passed the Ventura County Line
CHORUS
Right on Time, Buddy

There's pretty little girls wherever you go
don't be sad if one lets you go
cause another one's gonna come along you know
and make you feel just fine
Like a train station in a foreign land
there you stand with your ticket in your hand
the light goes POP and the bell goes BAM
CHORUS
Pick you up right on time buddy
Pick you up right on time buddy
Pick you up right on time buddy
Pick you up right on time
Pick you up right on time buddy
Pick you up right on time buddy
Pick you up right on time buddy
Pick you up right on time
There's another day just waiting behind
the one you're on so quit your crying
Get your hiney on down the line
you know you're gonna be just fine
Like a train station in a foreign land
there you stand with your ticket in your hand
the light goes POP and the bell goes BAM
CHORUS
Instrumental Break
There's pretty little girls wherever you go
don't be sad if one tells you no
Cause another one's gonna come along you know
and give you that thumb's up sign
Like a train station in a foreign land
there you stand with your ticket in your hand
the light goes POP and the bell goes BLAM
CHORUS
Pick you up right on time buddy etc.

If I take a ride with you
Will you try to get me home by two?
We can roam around all day
Have ourselves a holiday
CHORUS
Mulholland highway
They say there's nothing new under the sun
You and me we're having so much fun
We don't have to wait another day
Up above the city it's so clear
The only place for me is with you dear
The ocean's just a couple miles away
We can drive and drive all day
CHORUS
INSTRUMENTAL
CHORUS
If I take a ride with you
Will you try to get me home by two?

If I Wake Up Tomorrow
© 2004 Fur Dixon & Danny Sheridan
If I wake up tomorrow and the rosy mornin' sun
should quit to shine,
And you my friend and lover
pack your truck and move on down the line,
With darkness in my eyes and in my heart
and in my soul, where will I be?
I'll be looking for some candles and a blanket
Right here where you left me.
I can take what you are giving
it's not easy living in this world at all,
But when you're blocking out the light
I can barely read the writing on the wall,
I've been a holy terror and if you can forgive
know where I'll be?
I'll be cleaning up the mess I made just yesterday
Right here where you left me.
BRIDGE
This heart used to abandon
couldn't stand giving up its wanderin' ways
Now I find, that yearning's not so strong
and I'm learning how to stay,
Well I've got nowhere to go but if I do
I'm gonna come right back again,
It's knowing that my path is free to walk
and your not a jealous man,
And if I should decide I need a ride
do you know where I'll be?
My thumb out on the roadside I'll be waiting,
Right here where you left me,
Right here where you left me,
Right here where you left me.
The Pearl and the Swine
© 2004 Steve Werner
She's the pearl and I'm the swine
She's my water into wine
She's the one I'm thinking of
She's the one that I love
She's a traveler of the world
she's a golden hearted girl
But if you think she'll just give in
you might get your head kicked in
CHORUS
She got plans and she got prayers
she got her songs out of the air
Her shining soul won't be denied
her love's so good it's chicken fried
CHORUS
She's got hair of fiery red
and a smile that knocks 'em dead
When my boots point sorrow bound
her love keeps 'em hangin round
CHORUS
I been out here on the run
couldn't outrun what I'd become
But she held open her front door
and said stranger run no more
CHORUS
REPEAT CHORUS
Where Are We Going?
© 2004 Fur Dixon
Evening shadows, my pajamas
Climb into the back of our station wagon
Daddy's driving, we're excited
ice cream store or the aerators?
CHORUS
Where are we going? Where are we going?
Where are we going, this time?
Where are we going? Where are we going?
Where are we going this time?
Hollywood the 1980's
Stoned out punk rockers in your station wagon
One more night like a thousand others
How do we get off of this one lame highway?
CHORUS
Where are we going? Where are we going?
Where are we going, this time?
Where are we going? Where are we going?
Where are we going this time?
Cause I don't know, anymore than you
We're trying to figure out what we're gonna do
You and me the road less traveled
gusty winds blowing grass and gravel
Freedom take us, don't forsake us
lead us all down a brighter highway
Where are we going? Where are we going?
Where are we going
Every Day a Different Journey
© 2002 Steve Werner
I found my soul in campfire coal
on a beach in Santa Cruz
On the road I'm on the road
I wear a pair of highway shoes
I thank these little sand fleas
for their little light that shines
And Woody's words a singing bird
to ease my troubled mind
CHORUS
Every day a different journey
every night you sleep somewhere
On a couch or in a pickup truck
the morning finds you there
So let every trouble and worry
blow windy in the air
Every day a different journey
every night you sleep somewhere
Every day a different journey
every night you sleep somewhere
Trouble, I got trouble
terrible trouble knows my name
Black of eye and armband
blue as whistles on a train
Now the whistle blows and here I go
anywhere but here
If Jesus was a railroad man
he'd offer me a beer
CHORUS
I was a hundred miles out of Phoenix
and the highway had shut down
A terrible accident
sent someone heaven bound
There wasn't anything that anyone
could think or do or say
So I sat down by that highwayside
and my guitar began to pray
CHORUS
When Will My Wandering Will End?
© 2004 Fur Dixon
I wonder when my wandering will end,
Wish I knew for sure
I'm waiting for my life to start again,
I know the sickness can you show me the cure?
I was in the city feeling kinda low, waiting for the snow,
nowhere left to go but in my mind
Feeling like a lowly buffalo, last one of my kind
CHORUS
I wonder when my wandering will end,
Wish I knew for sure
I'm waiting for my life to start again,
I won't be lonely anymore
BRIDGE
Now and then there's no worry about tomorrow,
No sorrow, no pain, no rain
Wind comes whistling up a new song,
And I'm home again
I was wild and rusty when we met that day,
how'd I get that way?
Forgot how to pray in my disease
You broke my bond and you threw away the key,
took me in your loving arms and set me free
CHORUS
I was waiting and waiting for my life to start again
I'm not alone anymore!
When My Face is Covered Over
© 2004 Steve Werner
When they pull the sheet across my face
will you sing the songs of a rover
Will there be ten others to take my place
when my face is covered over
When my fingers no longer play
upon the wood and steel
Will the wood go dust and the strings red rust
when my ashes line the field
I'll feel no breeze of the open road
my wandering days behind me
Death's quiet hand will lead me where
only memories can find me
If my soul be free you will still see me
in the sunlight in your window
And hear my whisper in your ear
in breezes singing soft and low
I've only gone a few steps on
and ever I'll be near you
Say my name I'll be by your side
sing my songs and I will hear you
I've only gone a few steps on
and ever I'll be near you
Say my name I'll be by your side
sing my songs and I will hear you
Backroads and Blue Skies
© 2004 Steve Werner and Fur Dixon
There's been dark clouds
and there's been rain
Breakdowns and pain worried pain
but only as much as we allow
There's gonna be backroads and blue skies now
Backroads and blue skies
Backroads and blue skies
Backroads and blue skies now
Backroads and blue skies
Backroads and blue skies
Backroads and blue skies
backroads and blue skies now
There's been dust bowls
and there's been fires
Flat tires and tongue talking liars
ease up that wrinkle in your brow
Buddy there's gonna be backroads and blue skies now
CHORUS
BRIDGE
Come for awhile
you and me are due a country mile
It's been so long
since I've seen you smile
If you're a traveler
well then you know
Rain's gonna fall and wind's gonna blow
but for every storm that you ride through
There's a backroad and a blue sky too
CHORUS
